Newly Crowned Miss America Attended Lutheran Elementary School in Indiana

BJS website reader Joe Hildreth reports that the new Miss America, Katie Stam is from Seymour, Indiana and attended one of the local LCMS elementary schools. Here is Joe’s report.

I was hoping you could post a congratulations to the new Miss America, Katie Stam. She is from Seymour, IN, a hotbed of Lutheranism. Her conservative Lutheran upbringing is evidenced by her morals and strength. She attended one of our local Lutheran elementary schools and her mother is even a teacher at another local Lutheran elementary school. Her aunt explained to me Sunday morning that her father had to re-record the music (he performed) a little lower for Katie’s rendition of “Via Dolorosa” due to Katie having laryngitis earlier in the week and not being able to hit the high notes she normally does…we are all proud of the local girl in the national spotlight who held on to her values. BTW if you did not see her sing in the pagent, you should view it. Thank you and God bless. Joe Hildreth

Thanks Joe for the news.

  1. I offer my congratulations to Katie for an excellent witness to Christ crucified in this national setting. The blessing of her “Via Dolorosa” singing was a stark contrast to the invocation of that Episcopal “bishop” and the no-God prayer offered at the recent presidential inauguration.

As to the pictures, Katie’s is surely more appealing to the modern eye – but the beauty of Pr. Wilken lies not in our eyes, but our ears. For daily, he delivers to this fallen world the clear Word of God to us and for us. This beauty is without end and will satisfy us for all eternity (when Pr. Wilken and Katie will be equally pleasing to our eyes, for we will see both through Christ our Lord.)

    Peace

  2. Oh sure Dennis, you just had to go and get all theological on us didn’t you? ๐Ÿ™‚

Actually, I couldn’t agree with you more – Wilken is more pleasing to the ear than the eye. ๐Ÿ™‚

Two smiley faces in one post – it must be my day off.

It was a pleasure meeting you in Ft. Wayne last week. I look forward to seeing you again at the conference.

    Pastor Rossow

  3. PS. Could a theologian please explain the Lutheran understanding of “the cattle.” It was the first note which appeared during Katie’s singing and a reference to this appears at the end of the OT reading for Sunday in Jonah. I am at somewhat of a loss to explain the Christological significance of “the cattle.” Perhaps Dr. Gard could attend to this mystery.

    Peace

  4. Mr. Peskey,
The bubble that appeared during Katie’s performance was referencing the fact she was an avid 4Her and showed dairy cattle at the local county fair. As for the OT reference, I wish I could help, but can not.
My wife and I discussed the contrast between Katie’s performance and the many “prayers” offered during the inauguration while watching the pagent Sat. night. I do not think Katie’s choice of songs will go unnoticed.
    Good job Katie!
    God bless

  5. Pastor Wilken–don’t listen to their teasing.
    You look marvelous.
    ๐Ÿ™‚
And as for a crown….you shall have a Crown of Life in Heaven, so what’s the rush?

  6. On a less than positive note (cynical is perhaps the word), someone has suggested that perhaps the POTS will enter the convention hall in 2010 in an open convertible with Miss Katie alongside him. That would be special.

Regardless, the song/hymn was great and she is a beeeyoutiful young woman – as were they all.

  7. It appears that the video has been removed from that website/link. I’d sure like to get around to seeing it. Does anyone know where it might still be available? Thanks.

  8. Terence (#11): I’m actually surprised it was there for so long — it most likely was removed due to copyright restrictions. I don’t see another copy of it.

  9. Who even cares about Miss America? This “contest” focuses mainly on physical beauty which is a gift of God and demonstrates absolutely no effort on the part of the very young contestants. I think it unwise for Lutherans to give credance to beauty pagents.
