More Contact with the Northwest District on Gay Activist Situation, by Pr. Rossow

I took some time today to call President Schumacher in the Northwest District Office. There is an on-going problem at Bethlehem Lutheran Church – Renton, Washington (LCMS). The biography for the music director on the congregation’s website lists as a part of his experience, artistic direction of the Gay and Lesbian Choir of Seattle.

Each time I have called the office I have not gotten through to the president but I have received confirmation from him that he received my follow-up e-mail. Again today I left a message with his secretary and sent another follow-up e-mail.

We are pleased that the link to the music director’s personal website has been taken down (which promoted more gay and lesbian activities) but the website still lists his past gay and lesbian activities. This would be like a congregation listing experience at an abortion mill in its biography for a parish nurse. In addition, it is just not right to have a gay/lesbian activist playing the organ while the congregation approaches the altar to receive the body and blood of the Lord, or having an openly gay supporter serving in any capacity in the church. Paul puts it this way:

1 Corinthians 5:9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—

And he says:

1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

I do not understand why this is allowed in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod? We have contacted President Kieschnick’s office. We were told his approach is to leave it to the local District President. At what point does he step in? It has been two months now since we brought this to both of these presidents attention. I was reading another website where the Atlantic District President assured the readers that President Kieschnick is solid on matters of morality. It doesn’t appear that way on this matter.

I will keep you posted if I hear of any action on this. In the meantime I encourage all of our readers to contact the Northwest District office concerning this matter. You can find their contact information by clicking here.

  1. This is a toughie for he who is tough on “matters of morality.” Does he do the right thing or does he keep the dogs of “Jesus Fist” at bay? I’m betting that POTS will stay on the sidelines for as long as he can and let the DP who is retiring this year take the heat. Then, . . . the whole issue starts over with a new DP.

Also, what is being done in the congregation regarding the organists proclivity toward the homosexual life style -whether he is a “mere” supporter or whether he is a devotee? Now a congregation is independent of the synod, but is it free to allow itself and its website to be used for ungodly purposes and the synod does nothing? God forbid.

It is nice that someone is keeping track of this in a kindly Christian manner as you are. Thanks.

  2. Elnathan,

Thanks for the encouragement. It is no fun doing this (for instance, the secretary got a little short with me) but I started it and will stay after it to the end. At some point before the election of a new president, the POTS will be asked to come out of the closet on this one.

  3. Pr. Rossow,

You have my support on this. I emailed both the DP and the pastor of this church about this issue and have heard nothing back from them. Not even a reply that my email was read.

  4. Pr. Rossow,

I commend your efforts and pray Christ grant you success. This is yet another issue of a congregation doing something that doesn’t square with Scripture or the Confessions, the DP hears the complaints and may even respond that he is doing something yet there are no results, and President Kieschnick responds in an overseeing but uninvolved manner.

I have dealt with President Kieschnick, President Mirly (MO District President), and Pr. Steve Benke concerning the Jefferson Hills (Lutheran) Church and many of their activities. I have also seen the standard put in place by Synod in dealing with President David Benke’s involvement in the Yankee Stadium event. I feel that after the failure of initial attempts to resolve these issues brother-to-brother the next logical step is to make these brother’s un-repented sin more public in a way that will allow it to be dealt with through District and Synodical Conventions. My opinion is Synod’s leadership is only held accountable through the votes at convention. Should the majority of votes correct these errors over the next two years, great, but should they support these individual’s actions then I will be considering other synodical affiliations.
