President Harrison comments on ULC

September 30th, 2011 190 comments

Found on the Witness, Mercy, Life Together blog: Friday, September 30, 2011 Dear Friends in Christ, In the course of the September meeting of the Council of Presidents, Minnesota North President Don Fondow and I requested of President Lane Seitz a meeting with himself and the Minnesota South District Board of Directors. Of the several concerns raised by the then-impending sale of the University Lutheran Chapel property, President Fondow and I were in agreement that it was unwise to disregard the resolution of the joint pastors’ conference requesting that any decision to sell the property be made at the Minnesota   More…

To Encourage a more Uniform Practice of Worship Forms from our Hymnals

September 29th, 2011 1 comment

TO ENCOURAGE A MORE UNIFORM PRACTICE OF WORSHIP FORMS FROM OUR HYMNALS WHEREAS, a great diversity of worship practices in our synod has led to less unity in our synod and not more unity; and WHEREAS, common questions after visiting a Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod congregation are, “How did you like that?” and “Will we ever come back?” instead of “How Christ-centered was the pastor’s sermon?” or “How well did the hymns and order of service proclaim Law and Gospel?”; and WHEREAS, the orders of service in our synodically approved hymnals faithfully proclaim the Word of God; therefore, be it RESOLVED,   More…

To Train Pastoral Candidates Thoroughly

September 29th, 2011 1 comment

TO TRAIN PASTORAL CANDIDATES THOROUGHLY WHEREAS, Jesus commanded His apostles to make disciples of all the nations by baptizing and teaching “all (emphasis added) that I have commanded you…” (Matthew 28:20); and WHEREAS, God, through the Apostle Paul, listed as one of the qualifications for pastors that they be “able to teach” (1 Timothy 3:3); and WHEREAS, believers and unbelievers alike benefit from a clergy that is well-trained and well-versed in all areas of Christian doctrine; and WHEREAS, even society at large stresses the great benefits of receiving more college education and not less; therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the   More…

ULC Purchase Agreement signed…

September 28th, 2011 207 comments

District Sells to Doran The link is from a friend…   What are the consequences of this?  Is there still a way to save ULC? This whole thing reminds me of a process with a goal that has had greased rails since it became public.  Just look at how quick the timeline happened…   Continue to keep all involved in your prayers.  Again, you may want to re-read the letter by Pr. Mark Preus which advises us to look at the Ninth Commandment on this. Just because it’s legal doesn’t make it right (especially in the Church).

An Invitation for the MN South Board of Directors and President Seitz to Use His Suggested Method to Solve the Conflict over ULC, by Pr. Rossow

September 26th, 2011 33 comments

Does anyone deny that there is a conflict in the Minnesota South District over the dispensation of the University Lutheran Chapel property? In the last edition of the Minnesota South District Reporter insert President Lane Seitz describes his own personal three-fold recommendation for resolving conflict. We ask him and the Minnesota South District Board of Directors to apply it in the current conflict between them and the University Lutheran Chapel Parish. President Seitz has invented a clever and helpful “Three-C’s” method for resolving conflict: Conversation – Talk truthfully face to face with the person with whom you disagree. Confession – When we   More…

Improvement to the Information Provided in District Financial Reports

September 26th, 2011 2 comments

IMPROVEMENT TO THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN DISTRICT FINANCIAL REPORTS WHEREAS, we have begun to realize that we have not always empowered laity to be full partners in the churches mission, and WHEREAS, part of the Christian’s responsibility is financial stewardship, and WHEREAS, our current district financial reports inhibit this full partnership, because; The Financial Reports included in the District Convention Workbook are formatted to meet Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAPP) non-profit reporting requirements, and that format does not lend itself to an understanding of the actual income and expenses numbers, or their relationship to budget, and This format uses different   More…

Great Stuff — Ballgame Excuses

September 25th, 2011 22 comments

This one gets you thinking .. found on facebook. HT: David Juhl I’m too tired to watch the ballgame. The day of the ballgame is the only day I have to myself. Everybody else will be there and I don’t want to see everybody else. There are hypocrites at the ballgame. All they want at the stadium is your money. I wish the ballgame would go faster so I could get home soon. I can think about the ballgame from home. I like ballgames, but I don’t have to go to one to like ballgames. Sound familiar? If you are   More…

To Ensure That Every Man who Pastors is a Pastor

September 23rd, 2011 1 comment

TO ENSURE THAT EVERY MAN WHO PASTORS IS A PASTOR WHEREAS, in certain situations today, the Synod approves of preaching and administration of the sacraments by men who have not been publicly called to and placed in the office of the ministry (this position is expressed, e.g., in 1989 Resolution 3-05B, “. . . when no pastor is available, and in the absence of any specific Scriptural directives to the contrary, congregations may arrange for the performance of these distinctive functions [preaching and administering the sacraments] by qualified individuals”); and WHEREAS, the Augsburg Confession’s fourteenth article reads, “Concerning church government   More…

To Encourage Harmony in the District’s Worship

September 23rd, 2011 1 comment

TO ENCOURAGE HARMONY IN THE DISTRICT’S WORSHIP WHEREAS, the Scriptures say that in Christian worship “all things should be done decently and in order” (I Cor. 14:40); and WHEREAS, the Scriptures say that, “‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things are helpful. ‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things build up ” (I Cor 10:23); and WHEREAS, the Formula of Concord states that the Church “in every time and place has the right, power, and authority to change, reduce, or expand [church] practices according to circumstances in an orderly and appropriate manner, without frivolity or offense, as seems   More…

Faithful use of LSB

September 23rd, 2011 No comments

TO ENCOURAGE FAITHFUL USE OF OUR NEW HYMNAL Whereas in 2006, the LCMS published Lutheran Service Book; and Whereas this book has proven a great blessing to our Synod not only in the richness of its presentation of the Gospel but in its ability to unify our Synod’s worship practices; and Whereas the LSB provides for a great variety of ceremonial, from quite simple to richly ornate; and Whereas it would be difficult to imagine the worship needs of any congregation of the ((DISTRICT)) could not be adequately met from this hymnal or its predecessor volumes (LW, TLH); THEREFORE BE   More…

Maintain Current Circuits

September 23rd, 2011 No comments

TO MAINTAIN THE CURRENT CIRCUIT ALIGNMENT UNLESS REALIGNMENT IS NECESSARY WHEREAS, the ((DISTRICT)) Board of Directors has recommended a realignment of visitation circuits within the district; and WHEREAS, this realignment has been proposed in part because the dissolution of one or more congregations in the district is possible, perhaps resulting in one or more visitation circuits that do not meet the criteria for an electoral circuit; and WHEREAS, it is not known which congregations, if any, will actually be dissolved, and so it is also unknown which circuits, if any, need to be realigned; and WHEREAS, many congregations within the   More…

Benke participates in worship service with ELCA, according to ELCA news release (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

September 23rd, 2011 145 comments

It was ten years ago today, on September 23, 2001, that Atlantic District President David Benke participated in the interfaith prayer service “A Prayer for America” in New York City. Benke had previously participated in an interfaith prayer service on September 9, 1998. On October 22, 1998, he signed a public apology in which he stated: “My participation in this service was a direct violation of the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions, and consequently, violation of the Constitution, Bylaws and doctrinal resolutions of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. I also recognize that my participation in this interfaith prayer service was   More…
