Lutherans In Africa — Bringing Lutheran Doctrine to an area twice the size of the U.S., Video from the Conference

February 22nd, 2013 5 comments

Want to know an organization which is centered on teaching Lutheran doctrine and practice to Africans?  Lutherans in Africa is it.  James May gave the last presentation at our Conference and talked about the need for Confessional Lutheranism in Africa and also the great hunger for confessional Lutheranism among the people and pastors of African congregations.  What tools are used for this great work?  That is the greatest part – Bibles, hymnals, catechisms, and the Book of Concord!   James and his coworkers strive to translate material and then spend weeks in the field teaching and distributing it.  Their teaching has   More…

Another Law/Gospel Gem from the Conference, Pr. Tony Sikora

Pr. Sikora preached the sermon for the Divine Service on Saturday morning using the texts for Lent 1.  Hopefully this one will help you in your future reading of Pastor Sikora’s wonderful sermons here on BJS.  Thanks to Peter Slayton for doing a bit above and beyond for getting this one to happen among technical difficulties.  Below is his sermon:

Pr. Bryan Wolfmueller – Out of Evangelicalism, Lutheran comfort for Evangelical despair.

Pr. Wolfmueller gave the second presentation at the 2013 BJS Conference.  His presentation was on the topic of coming out of Evangelicalism.  He spoke within the framework of Psalm 119, trying to emphasizing the value and importance of God’s Word in our lives.  He spoke of Evangelicalism’s pendulum between despair and prideful deception – a pendulum that often throws folks off.   Throughout it all, you get a presentation that is more proclamation than presentation.  Take a look:       For all of the conference videos (one or two more yet to be released) go to our YouTube page:

Christ the Steadfast — An excellent Law/Gospel sermon by Pr. Hans Fiene

On Friday night of our conference, right after hearing stand-up comedy by Pr. Wolfmueller we gathered in the sanctuary of Bethany Lutheran Church in Naperville to pray Evening Prayer together.  Pr. Hans Fiene preached a fine sermon in which the Law was preached sternly and the Gospel sweetly.  This sermon is a must watch for our regular readers.   Here is the link to the video on the Steadfast Lutherans YouTube page:       For all of the conference videos (more will appear throughout this week) go to our YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/steadfastlutherans

BJS Conference 2013 Highlights — Day One

February 16th, 2013 9 comments

The Conference is underway and day one is complete.  Yesterday we gathered to hear Pr. Jonathan Fisk speak and discuss the crisis we have in catechizing our young ones (in homes, churches, and schools).  He skillfully addressed the problems and honestly expressed his own ongoing struggle to find a solution with regards to how we pass down the faith from generation to generation (especially this new generation which is being entertained to death).  Of particular note, Pr. Fisk discussed the phrase “I’ve been a Lutheran all my life, but…” which is how Lutherans confess non-Lutheran teachings and criticize Lutheran doctrine   More…
