It’s true. Check out what the children at Mount Hope Lutheran Church and School in Casper, Wyoming are doing by clicking here. You can also read a fine commentary by Pr. Andrew Richard.
“Lord, Thee I Love With All My Heart” is an essential hymn for Lutherans to relearn today for a myriad of reasons:
- Verse one is essentially a paraphrase of powerful verses from Psalm 73. Any hymnody that steeps us in the language of the Psalms offers the best in Christian devotion.
- Verse two is especially useful for the Christian wedding.
- Verse three is especially useful for the Christian funeral or burial. At my parish we have made it custom to sing it at graveside, as it is a powerful confession of the resurrection of the body.
- It’s Lutheran. This hymn probably isn’t sung much in other churches. If we want to raise up a new generation which is committed to the unique worship and devotion of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, we must sing hymns like this. The pastors of Mount Hope in Casper realize this and are doing a good job.
- It’s an all around beautiful hymn, both in content and its tune.
It is heartening to hear the voices of little children sing hymns like “Lord, Thee I Love With All My Heart.” They can do it. Your whole congregation can too. Put this one in your arsenal, if you haven’t already. It is Lutheran Service Book #708.
Hey, I hear some harmony singing there.
