Advent 2019 Series – Picture of a Profound Mystery – Service Plan

It’s that time again when we are ready to release the service plan for our 2019 Advent Series (devotions will be out by the end of November).

This year we are choosing the texts around Advent and Christmas to focus upon marriage, husbands, and wives.  St. Paul tells us that marriage is about Christ and His Church and this is a profound mystery in Ephesians 5.  There are many reasons why the average Lutheran parish may want to use this series this year (abominable view of marriage abound in our culture, divorce, fornication, cohabitation, etc.).  This series will draw upon the texts around Advent and Christmastime to teach about God’s sacred institution of marriage.  Advent is a penitential season as well, so it is a proper time to consider this institution and consider our sins in relation to it, repent, believe the gospel and boldly confess God’s truth before our fellow Christians and the onlooking world.

Here is a sample service plan to go along with this theme and the use of one of the prayer offices in Lutheran Service Book.

  1. Thanks for putting this together! This looks good.

Christmas Day itself could then be an opportunity to mention a continuation of the family vocation theme: point out the God-ordained fruit of godly marriage: children. That’s what He oriented marriage towards. I’ll grant that Mary and Joseph is something of a special case, but don’t you think there’s enough commonalities to mention it?

  2. Will there be sample sermons or Bible studies as well, or simply the devotions? Either way, I would be interested in receiving them.

  3. Pastor Scheer, do you have any image files that can be used for promotion and bulletins? Thanks.
