A Jubilate Sonnet

What is this joy that none can take from me?
Is there a happiness that has more pow’r
Than pain, than guilt, than life’s sad final hour?
Could eyes that earth can grant such heaven see?

Or could it fill the widow’s lonely heart?
Or could it stop the addict’s endless ache?
Or could it from the dust the corpses wake
And from their silence some new singing start?

To eyes that widen in the joyous sight
Of family, work well done, and children grown;
To eyes that close to all of earth’s delight
When into dust their flesh and blood are sown

From out the grave, from which You, Christ, did wake,
Speak! Give to us the joy no one can take.
