Book Review – The Angel’s Portion. A Clergyman’s Whisky Narrative.

Angels PortionI would like to start out this review by being brutally honest. I have never written a book review. I’ll be even more honest, I don’t really like reading. Reading was always a struggle for me in school and even now as an adult I can count how many books I’ve read the past year on one hand. On top of that, my wife seems to read three books a week which makes me feel like a complete idiot. She does have the only degree in the house so I usually just admit she is much smarter than I am and move on. I will continue with my honesty in saying the book I am reviewing is right up my alley – Scotch whisky. Within the past year I have gotten very interested in tasting Scotch whisky and learning as much as I can about the history, craftsmanship, and differences of all the distilleries in Scotland. Through that learning and researching I’ve come to know other people who enjoy Scotch whisky including, one of the authors here at Brothers of John the Steadfast, Pastor Christopher Thoma. When I heard he was going to be putting out a book with all his Scotch whisky reviews I thought it would be a great addition to my library of whisky related books.

Now before you click out of this page to go check Facebook for the 100th time today or even worse get all pietistic let me explain. I’m a Scotch whisky enthusiast, a malt maniac who will read numerous reviews of the same Scotch whisky online before I decide if I will buy it or not. I watch YouTube videos of people tasting Scotch whisky and giving their tasting notes. Most would say “Get a life!” but it’s sort of a hobby for me. I went into this book thinking “Man, this is going to be great! Scotch whisky reviews from a fellow Lutheran and author on Steadfast Lutherans!”

Boy was I wrong, it wasn’t what I expected. It was much more. Make no mistake; there is plenty of Scotch whisky information in this book. The Angel’s Portion gives helpful hints, facts and tasting notes galore but still manages to keep you engaged and interested. The guy who doesn’t like reading was grabbing this book instead of his phone every free moment he had. To say the author has a great talent for creative writing would be a vast understatement. Included within the pages of The Angel’s Portion are engrossing stories of family, friends, theology and even an appearance by Darth Vader. What I thought was going to be a book of Scotch whisky reviews was actually a series well written stories that suck you in and keep the pages turning. I have not read another Scotch whisky book written with so much passion for whisky and even more passion for storytelling. The author writes each story not just to give you an honest opinion of the whisky being reviewed but to entertain you with intelligent, sometimes sarcastic, but always relatable and interesting writing.

When people see this book on the shelf or online they may pass it by because they don’t drink Scotch whisky – big mistake. Do yourself a favor and order your very own copy today. I’m sure the author will not be disappointed if you are not drinking a Scotch whisky while reading it. So log out of Facebook, turn off your phone and grab your favorite drink of choice and enjoy Pastor Thoma’s Whisky Narrative.
