The 2015 BJS Conference: Frostbite, Liturgical Dance and Heterodoxy! (Oh My!)

Eurotard Liturgical DressIn a little over a month, my wife and I will be setting off for a 2 night stay in beautiful Naperville, Illinois. That’s right, in the dead of winter, we are willingly traveling from an already cold Toledo suburb to an even colder and windier Chicago suburb.

Yay frostbite.

While I am no fan of the cold, I do enjoy reading, writing and talking theology with my many Confessional Lutheran brothers and sisters. Thus is the reason for the trip. You see my wife and I will be heading to the Comic-Con of theology lovingly known as “The 2015 Brothers of John the Steadfast conference.” The BJS conference, or Bro-Jo-Con (as I call it), isn’t for the privileged few, but instead for anyone and everyone interested. The theme of this year’s conference is “When Heterodoxy Hits Home” and deals with the innovational errors that are eroding confessional life within the LCMS.

The featured speakers are…

As February ever approaches, I find myself getting all the more excited to be able to sit with these brothers who have helped me so much along the way. If you are not familiar with these gentlemen, I strongly encourage you to click the links provided and make your acquaintance. Doing so will lead to a journey ripe with humor, wisdom and sincerity, all rooted in an honest, uncompromising focus on Christ for you in word and sacrament. These men, as irreverent as some may seem, have a genuine love for Christ and his church. This is the focus of their respective ministries and will come across in spades at the conference.

So while I earnestly desire an appearance from Horus or Donall & Connall (while praying that Pr. Wolfmueller won’t be performing a liturgical dance…or standup), those things are just icing (or poo) on the cake. The primary reason that my wife and I are attending, is to gain insight on how to fight the heterodoxy that is presently storming the gates of the LCMS. We, the LCMS lay people, need to make ourselves aware of the attacks that are coming from within our congregations. These attacks, many times, appear to be innocuous and are typically birthed from good intentions; however they will metastasize and grow like cancer if ignored. I want these attacks to become readily visible on my radar early in their development as a preventative precaution to discern the good from bad for the health of my congregation. As with cancer, early detection is the key. If you have the same desire, I wholeheartedly encourage you to attend the conference as well and share the conference information with your pastor for distribution in your weekly announcements.  The information that will be presented is direly important. We must educate ourselves in order to prepare for the fight to maintain the integrity of our confessions.

Will you join me?
