A Hymn on the Scriptures
by Rev. Mark Preus
Come, Jesus Christ, our precious Lord,
And give Your holy Spirit,
Who comforts sinners with Your Word
To clothe them with Your merit;
For this the Scriptures were inspired,
That we who in our sins were mired
Might know You as our Savior,
And praise Your name forever.
For patience, comfort, and for hope
The Scriptures were recorded;
Now those who in the darkness grope
Are with Your light rewarded.
By grace, for free, You did fulfill
For us the Father’s holy will,
To cleanse our guilty conscience
And give Your Spirit’s patience.
There is no lie in how You loved,
Your grace is undeceiving;
So prophets by Your Breath were moved,
That we, Your Word receiving,
May know beyond all shadows’ doubt
That you cast Satan’s errors out
And left your truth remaining,
Your Church’s faith sustaining.
Each word was given from Your hand –
You teach us so to know You;
Each Scripture shall unbroken stand
For none can overthrow You.
It is Your will that we should know
The truths that from the Father flow,
That we, through faith forgiven,
May know the joy of heaven.
For what Your Scriptures give to us,
Be praise to You forever;
O Lord, our spotless righteousness,
Let us forsake you never,
But let us cling to what You wrote,
And may we here its truth promote,
Till what You here have spoken
Remains in Heav’n unbroken.
Amen.
