Rev. Seltz and LCMS President Harrison Meet Face-to-Face

The President of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and the Speaker of The Lutheran Hour radio program are two of the most influential positions throughout the Christian world. The two new men who have moved into these positions within the past year, Rev. Matthew Harrison and Rev. Greg Seltz, got together at the world headquarters of Lutheran Hour Ministries in early March to welcome each other to their new positions, share stories about their ministries, and discuss some of the challenges facing the church today.

Special thanks to the Lutheran Hour Ministries staff for getting us a link to this video so quickly. The original LHM interview can be found here.

About Norm Fisher

Norm was raised in the UCC in Connecticut, and like many fell away from the church after high school. With this background he saw it primarily as a service organization. On the miracle of his first child he came back to the church. On moving to Texas a few years later he found a home in Lutheranism when he was invited to a confessional church a half-hour away by our new neighbors.

He is one of those people who found a like mind in computers while in Middle School and has been programming ever since. He's responsible for many websites, including the Book of Concord,, and several other sites.

He has served the church in various positions, including financial secretary, sunday school teacher, elder, PTF board member, and choir member.

Norm has been involved behind the scenes in many of the "go-to" websites for Lutherans going back many years.

  1. Wow, this is so cool.

What a wonderful introduction to Pastor Seltz. I like him already now.

And they both, clearly, are great church men, with the right priorities and the balance of humility and confidence in God that characterizes the best of the Missouri Synod.

I love the way Pastor Harrison said that it is just unacceptable that the Missouri Synod decline at this point. We have so much to offer.

And I’m glad that they know that we are praying for them.

Interesting statistics about youth–only half of baptized babies ever get confirmed, and only half of the confirmed continue to go to church. So completely tragic. I’m pondering this prayerfully now.

Did you notice that Pastor Harrison said that the restructuring is about finished? That’s good news, and actually it’s pretty impressive to me as a business person. I didn’t think that they would be able to get done for at least a year, given the sweep of the changes.

  2. Heard and read the sermon, watched and listened to the video, I think that we again have 2 confessional, theologians in two of the most visible positions in our Church. God preserve them.

  3. At the 2010 LCEF Fall Leadership Conference in Nashville the former Lutheran Hour speaker gave a keynote address which many interpreted as less than supportive of Pres. Harrison. (Though anyone present will recall how he concluded by saying that was “bologna” complete with a Powerpoint slide of the same.)

So this is a VERY welcome change in tone indeed.

  4. There are a few short clips of Rev. Seltz on YouTube speaking at a Regional Outreach Conference (ROC) Lutheran Hour Ministries put on a few months ago. The channel can be accessed here: .

I’m not skilled at discerning preaching, but Rev. Seltz has given me a good impression so far.
