Rev. Matt Harrison’s long awaited book of essays by previous LCMS presidents is now available for purchase. (Click here to order.)
We featured an excerpt last week which demonstrates the genius of this book. We are in a very difficult time as a synod. Missionaries are being called back from the field, synodical financial support for our colleges and seminaries is at an all time low, and countless local congregations are looking more like Baptist and American Evangelical parishes than Missouri Synod Lutheran. Turning to the wisdom of conservative, confessional leaders of the past is a wise move. That is exactly what Rev. Harrison provides for us in this new book. We recommend it to the Brothers of John the Steadfast and to all our readers.
Many congregations are nominating Rev. Harrison for the office of President of the LCMS. My own congregation has done so. His work of translating and editing these fine theologians of the past is adding to his already solid qualifications for the position. The Brothers of John the Steadfast are committed to understanding and promoting the Lutheran Confessions, supporting the 2,000 year old liturgy of the church, promoting new Lutheran media and helping men to be the spiritual heads that Christ intends them to be. We have found that the current LCMS president and the leaders he has surrounded himself with are not as supportive of these goals as is Rev. Harrison. In short, we believe Rev. Harrison would be good for the LCMS and his work on this book is a clear testimony of his commitment to the historic Lutheranism that is rooted in and grows out of the teachings of Holy Scripture. For more on how Rev. Harrison views the challenges our synod faces we recommend you read his occasional piece “It’s Time.”
Here is a video of Rev Harrison talking about what is in the book found on his blog.
