The Boring-Isn’t-Bad Convention (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

The gavel has sounded. The 2013 National LCMS Convention has come to a close. Some might call it “The Do-Nothing Convention.” Or “The Kick-the-Can-Down-the-Road Convention.” Or “The It-Isn’t-Time-Yet Convention.” Or “The Baptized-for-the-Next-Convention Convention.” But I think a better name might be “The Boring-Isn’t-Bad Convention.” Late in the week President Harrison said (I’m paraphrasing, since I don’t have the exact quote in front of me): “Some have said this has been a boring convention. And that’s not bad.” My translation: There’s no way this convention could possibly match the intense drama of the 2010 convention. And a lot of the resolutions   More…

Recapping the Resolutions: One Thing to Pool Them All (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

Over the past week, I posted seven articles with my comments on the 116 proposed resolutions coming from the seven floor committees. There was a request to put those all together into one resource for more convenient use. Here it is then, “One Thing to Pool Them All,” a fourteen-page pdf file that you can link and download: Proposed Resolutions: Comments by Pr. Charles Henrickson Also, remember that you should have at hand these documents, linked here, which you can also find at lcms.org/convention: Today’s Business Convention Workbook 2010 Handbook Finally, here is my Top Ten list of ten of   More…

Proposed Resolutions: Committee 7, Structure and Ecclesiastical Matters (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

“I hold in my hand . . . the last envelope.” Audience cheers wildly. Carnac stares at audience. I now come to the last floor committee. But instead of cheering wildly, I want you to pay close attention. Because while “Structure and Ecclesiastical Matters” may sound like a real snoozefest–and, no doubt, there is much eye-glazing-over material in here–one must not let down one’s guard, lest some significant change for the worse sneak through. And this floor committee does propose a couple of the worst resolutions out of all 116 in Today’s Business. And so let’s join Ed and Carnac   More…

Proposed Resolutions: Committee 6, Administration and Finance (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

July 11th, 2013 4 comments

To the sixth of the seven floor committees, i.e., Administration and Finance. Most of the resolutions here look fairly innocuous. If you have any feedback, try to get it to the committee chairman by tomorrow, if possible. For reference: Today’s Business Convention Workbook 2010 Handbook 6. ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE (TB, pp. 126-43) 6-01: To Promote Financially Healthy Universities, Seminaries, and Church Workers Develop strategies to eliminate debt among our schools, church work students, and church workers. 6-02: To (Joy)fully Fund Career and GEO Missionaries Support, and expand the number of, our 69 career and 100 GEO missionaries and their families.   More…

Proposed Resolutions: Committee 5, Seminary and University Education (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

On to Committee 5. Feedback on proposed resolutions from any of the seven floor committees should be sent to the respective committee chairman by tomorrow, if possible. (Note: My comment on 5-04 has been revised since original posting.) For reference: Today’s Business Convention Workbook 2010 Handbook 5. SEMINARY AND UNIVERSITY EDUCATION (TB, pp. 100-25) 5-01: To Encourage Continued Faithful Witness by the Concordia University System President to appoint task force to strengthen confessional Lutheran identity of our Concordias. Lay Deacons: Kicking the Can Down the Road? (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

July 10th, 2013 8 comments

(This post follows up on my previous one, about Committee 4, as it deals in more depth with Resolution 4-06. This article appears in the July 2013 edition of The Lutheran Clarion, lutheranclarion.org. CH) Lay Deacons: Kicking the Can Down the Road? “Therefore an overseer must be . . . able to teach. . .” (1 Timothy 3:2). “He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it” (Titus 1:9). “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for   More…

Proposed Resolutions: Committee 3, Life Together (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

I’m doing more than one floor committee today, so that we can get through all seven by Friday, which is when the committee chairmen (listed on page 11 of Today’s Business) want feedback to be received. We continue, then, with Committee 3, Life Together. As with all of the proposed resolutions, it is helpful to have at hand these documents: Today’s Business Convention Workbook 2010 Handbook 3. LIFE TOGETHER (TB, pp. 69-83) 3-01: To Expand the Koinonia Project Will pass, but leaves out, as specific content to be included in the Koinonia Project, Articles VI and VII of the Constitution,   More…

Proposed Resolutions: Committee 2, Mercy (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

At every convention, whether district or national, there are always a large number of what I call “mom and apple pie” resolutions. They usually go something like this: To Encourage Good Things RESOLUTION 9-999 WHEREAS, Our committee has to come up with some resolutions that will sound nice and will pass easily; and WHEREAS, Good things are good; and WHEREAS, Mom and apple pie are outstanding examples of good things; therefore be it Resolved, That we encourage everyone to go out and do good things, including, but not limited to, the thanking of moms and the eating of apple pies;   More…

Proposed Resolutions: Omnibus; Committee 1, Witness (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

The National Convention of the LCMS will soon be here, July 20-25 in St. Louis. Conventions do two main types of business, elections and resolutions. (For elections, see Biographical Synopses & Statements of Nominees, as well as the recommendations of The United List.) Today we begin a series of seven articles on the resolutions being proposed by the seven floor committees, offering brief comments on the 116 proposed resolutions. Throughout, it will be helpful to have at hand these documents for reference: Today’s Business Convention Workbook 2010 Handbook Delegates and non-delegates alike have several ways to give their input on   More…

Convention 2013: Today’s Business now online (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

St. Louis, July 20-25, 2013 The first issue of Today’s Business is now online. This is about a week earlier than I, for one, was expecting. The print edition will follow, being sent to convention attendees sometime within the next couple of weeks. Today’s Business contains Part 2 of the President’s Report, i.e., President Harrison’s specific recommendations to the convention floor committees when they assembled on May 17. The main part of Today’s Business consists of the Proposed Resolutions that those floor committees then prepared, based on the overtures and reports that had been submitted for the Convention Workbook. Women in Combat: Overture for the 2013 Synodical Convention

February 8th, 2013 44 comments

The following overture concerning women in combat is already being considered by congregations in several districts (and hopefully more soon). I pass it on in the hopes that the pastors and congregations of the synod will consider it in prayer and love for neighbor. I believe it to be a good overture. I hope and pray our Synod will pass it as a resolution this coming summer in convention.  However, you must move fast, overtures must be submitted by March 2nd. Here is a good summary of how to properly submit an overture: http://steadfastlutherans.org/?p=25311 There are two avenues remaining to submit   More…

Great Stuff Found on the Web — Thoughts on a Failed Resolution by Pr. William Weedon

February 22nd, 2012 225 comments

by Pastor William Weedon on Weedon’s Blog:   My parish had sent up a sort of trial balloon at the District Convention. it more or less made it through floor committee. It was to encourage the parishes of our District and of our Synod to use for our services and rites one of the Synod’s hymnbooks/agendas: TLH, LW, LSB and even All God’s People Sing, Hymnal Supplement ’98, and Worship Supplement. It specifically wasn’t speaking of hymns or other attendant music – it spoke to the services and rites. It was fascinating to HEAR how people perceived the resolution. Some   More…

Proposed Resolutions: Committee 8, Structure and Governance, 8-27 through 8-34 and Conclusion (by Pr. Charles Henrickson)

In this entry, we complete our tour of the 106 proposed resolutions from the eight floor committees, as found in “Today’s Business.” To see the previous articles in this series, go to Henrickson’s blog at steadfastlutherans.org. We now look at the remaining resolutions (8-27 through 8-34) proposed by Floor Committee 8, Synod Structure and Governance, and we wrap it all up with a Conclusion: 8-27: To Add A New Article XIV This new amendment on the relation of Bylaws and Constitution seems unnecessary. And is there anything lurking in the phrase “binding regulations”? I don’t know. MAYBE. 8-28: To Clarify   More…

We’re nearing the end of our look at the 106 proposed resolutions from the eight floor committees, as found in “Today’s Business.” To see the previous articles in this series, go to Henrickson’s blog at steadfastlutherans.org. (Note that in my previous entry, I have just now changed my comments on 8-06.)
