Steadfast in Society: Ante Bellum

Rediscovery #: 18437On April 12th 1861 one of the most famous battles in American History began and opened up the flood gates to the bloodiest and costliest war that America had ever seen. The battle of Fort Sumter started a war that would leave 625,000 Americans, on both sides, dead. Three days after this battle Governor John W. Ellis wrote a letter to Simon Cameron, the Secretary of War and to the administration of President Abraham Lincoln.

This letter read:

“For dispatch is read and if genuine which its extraordinary character leads me to doubt I have to say in reply that I regard the levy of troops made by the administration for the purpose of subjugating the States of the South, as in violation of the Constitution and a gross usurpation of power. I can be no party to this wicked violation of the laws of the country, and to this war upon the liberties of a free people. You can get no troops from North Carolina.”

This letter from Gov. John Ellis stood firm on what they believed was truly an outrageous act of tyranny from the government which was choosing to “not allow” secession. Whatever your view on who was the “good guy” or “bad guy” during the Civil War, I am sure that you can see the lines drawn even deeper in the sand when it comes to the 21st century’s civil war. As President Obama has cast his tyrannical mandate on the consciences of Roman Catholics he is not merely oppressing confessing Christians — he is, at the root, oppressing the American Constitution and the American people. And while this tyrannical move of the Obama administration tries to hide behind the label of “women’s heath” (a life statement) it ultimately leads to an increase in the number of deaths (via morning after pill and Ella) which will far surpass the number from the American Civil War.

This century’s civil war is a silent one. It is one that is fought by and against Christians everywhere, and it far surpasses politics. In the Second World War, it was an evil yet effective tyrannical move by Adolf Hitler to first attack the churches in Germany. That move was slow and silent. How is it possible to convince a nation that the elimination of a race is a good idea? Simple, tear down the church quietly, and you do so because the church is the only source of peace and hope in this world. Without the church we have Nazi Germany, but this time the Jewish people are not the target… voiceless unborn children are.

President HarrisonIn these times we must thank our Lord that we have been washed in the holy waters of Baptism and that we feast on the flesh and blood of Christ. It is only in the Lamb of God that we find our peace and not in princes (Psalm 146) or the majority rule. I thank God for the stalwart leadership of Rev. Matt Harrison who has stood in the face of the corrupt and the oppressive and boldly proclaimed God’s Word.  As we approach the one year anniversary of the voice of God’s Law being proclaimed by Rev. Harrison may we be restrengthened in our resolve for a pure confession and stand even more steadfast behind Rev. Harrison as he continues to proclaim God’s Word on our behalf to our nation.  To you, Rev. Harrison, I say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” May we all stand with you and fight together for the vulnerable unborn. I, for one, will stand with the Church.  As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.

And to the continuing tyranny of the Obama administration with its encroachment on the free conscience, let us join with the voice of Gov. John Ellis and say, “We can be no party to this wicked violation of the laws of the country, and to this war upon the liberties of a free people. You can get no troops from The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.“
