Great Stuff Found on the Web — Mini-Travelogue by Al Collver on abc3miscellany

October 27th, 2010 Post by

Synod President Matthew Harrison is visiting in Germany. Dr. Albert B. Collver,
Director of Church Relations has been posting several pictures and videos, a mini-travelogue during their visit; it is well worth reviewing.

Review the blog postings from Oct 22nd through today to enjoy a mini-trip and follow along at least through Oct 25th.

On Friday morning, President Harrison and I arrived in Berlin, Germany, for meetings related to the International Lutheran Society of Wittenberg (ILSW), a project the Synod in the 2010 convention passed as Resolution 1-08 — “To Encourage the ‘Wittenberg Project’ as a Gospel Witness Opportunity” and for a meeting of the International Lutheran Council (ILC). The afternoon afforded the opportunity to visit several church sites in Berlin such as SELK’s Mariengemeinde in Berlin, founded by Bishop-Emeritus Schoene. Dr. Martens wrote this excellent essay on the “Agreement and Disagreement on Justification by Faith Alone,” in CTQ.

President Harrison met with the International Lutheran Council (ILC) Chairman who is now Bishop Hans-Jörg Voigt, formerly the Vice-Chairman while former Missouri Synod President Keischnick was serving as ILC Chairman. Bishop Voigt heads the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (Selbständige Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche – SELK).

I was ever grateful for the altar and pulpit fellowship the LCMS has with the SELK. I was able to be fed at several congregations while studying abroad in Germany: Mariengemeinde in Zehlendorf, Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Muenchen und Mannheim.

    Dear Norm,

Thanks for more “Great Stuff on the Web”!

If any folks among the BJS readers are thinking about going to the Luther Lands for the 500th anniversary (2017), the places President Harrison and Dr. Collver have visited should be high priorities. Berlin: Nikolaikirche, Marienkirche, and the Dom. Berlin-Zehlendorf: Mariengemeinde for divine service under Rev. Dr. Gottfried Martens. Treuenbrietzen. and of course Wittenberg. Also they should visit the other places where Luther lived, which are described in a book you noted in a previous post ( see http://steadfastlutherans.org/?p=12441 ).

Martens just recently published a superb article in the “Lutheran Quarterly” (24 #3, Autumn 2010) titled “Inconsequential Signatures: The Decade after the Signing of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.” He is the world expert on the Lutheran World Federation’s theology of justification, which is assumedly the same as LWF member churches. Martens is also an associate editor for the quarterly theological journal “Lutherische Beitrage,” which publishes confessional Lutheran theological articles of the highest quality.

Thanks again, Norm, for finding all this great stuff!

Yours in Christ, Martin R. Noland
