This coming Saturday through Tuesday (June 11-14) is the election for the President of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Each congregation of Synod has two votes for the President of Synod, one pastor and one lay. These “electors” were the delegates to the District Conventions in 2015.
So if you care about the future of our church body, who do you talk to about it, and how do you talk to them? Here are a few suggestions:
– Ask your pastor who the lay elector is, then try to schedule a time to visit with them in the next few days.
– Listen to what they think. Ask what they have been reading or hearing. Find out what is important to them and why.
– Highlight what has been happening in The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod over the past six years. A few of them might include:
- More missionaries in the field than we have had in years, and more congregations supporting them.
- A greater sense of peace in our Church, while at the same time recognizing thechallenges and opportunities we face.
- 16 million dollar inherited debt eliminated.
- Great work being done upholding and highlighting a biblical view of man and woman.
- Leading the conversation in our culture about religious freedom (see, for example, President Harrison’s testimony before Congress on the HHS mandate)
– Ask if the problems or concerns that have been voiced warrant a complete overhaul of the administration, or if patient and careful redirection in some areas might be better.
Those are a few things to think about. God bless you as we prepare for this important election in our church body.
