Press Release — New Mission Plant — Tradition is the New Innovation

Here is a “press release” that just came across my desk that shows a new mission congregation in Moscow, Idaho. This mission plant could use your prayers and support .. read below for more information. We previously asked for donations for this mission on our article Help Supply a new Confessional Parish.

Tradition is the new innovation

MOSCOW, Idaho – July 21, 2014 – Messiah Lutheran Church in Seattle planted a mission church in Moscow, where previously there had been no Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) presence.  The mission church officially formed June 22 and is currently home to 36 baptized members.

What to expect

Messiah Lutheran Church, Moscow Mission, is a distinctly Lutheran congregation that deeply respects and adheres to the traditions of the historic Lutheran church. The mission reflects a wide variety of backgrounds, interests and talents, but is united by the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. The congregation strives to be a caring Christian community that will serve the people of Latah County, with the peace of God that transcends all understanding, the peace that comes only through the Knowledge of Jesus Christ.

The purpose of this congregation

It is the mission of this church to preach, teach, and confess Christ-Crucified for the forgiveness of sins.

Sunday Divine Service (Gottesdienst)

Barring the first Sunday of each month, the congregation gathers for Sunday School and Adult Bible Class at 9:30 a.m. and Divine Service – without communion – at 10:45 a.m. Adult Bible studies and the Divine Service are streamed from Messiah Seattle.

On the first Sunday of the month, Pastor Musegades of Trinity Lutheran Church (Grangeville, ID) leads the congregation in the Divine Service, with communion. This 3 p.m. service takes the place of the regular morning service and is typically followed with Sunday School, a time of fellowship and a potluck.

A brief history

Congregants of the Moscow Mission gathered informally for Hymn Sings every Thursday night for a year. These casual gatherings grew into an earnest desire to serve the community of Moscow and the students at the University of Idaho by establishing the first LCMS church in Moscow.

On June 22, 2014 this desire became a reality.  With a service officiated by Pastor Mike Musegades of Trinity Lutheran Church (Grangeville, ID), assisted by Pastors Lassman (Sr. Pastor, Messiah Seattle) and Mankin (Assoc. Pastor, Messiah Seattle), the church formed and officially joined the LCMS community.

This is still an early-stage mission development with various parish supply needs.  If you know of any source for materials that would benefit from regular use in our Lord’s earthly kingdom, please contact us.
