The marine layer from Lake Michigan, the dunes and the sandy soil make Southwest Michigan a cornucopia of various fruits: apples, peaches, raspberries and most importantly Riesling grapes that are turned into that delicious German wine. It was also a fruitful place for a recent Lutherans in Africa (LIA) promotional trip.

The Director of Lutherans in Africa, Rev. James May and I traveled for two days in Southwest Michigan and met with fifteen pastors and were warmly received by all. Several of the pastors have agreed to host an LIA Sunday to raise funds for the annual budget and the current capital campaign.

The Lutheran Church in Africa is woefully under-resourced and understaffed and as a result the Lutherans are often Lutherans in name only. James May and the staff of Lutherans in Africa address this challenge with two effective strategies. First, James routinely holds week-long seminars on Lutheran doctrine all over the continent. Secondly, the LIA staff works in conjunction with the Lutheran Heritage Foundation to translate Lutheran materials into the local languages.

The capital campaign is raising funds for a new Lutheran Center in Nairobi as a home base for LIA and a way to do more seminars in a more cost effective way. For more information on Lutherans in Africa and the capital campaign you can click here.

  1. Cool to see that. A pity it had to be in the city near the college of the green and white “little brother” (If you’re a college football fan, you’ll get the reference).
