“Alleluia Now Is Our Song,” an Easter hymn by Pr. Charles Henrickson

Charles HenricksonOK, OK, so I’ll get back to synodical politics in a day or two. But today is Sunday, and it’s still Easter, so I can’t help but celebrate a little more.

A few days ago my friend Tom Engler asked me to write words to some music he had heard on a Korean historical drama. Tom suggested, “Could be Easter . . . (martial, manly, overcoming death, etc.).” So that’s what I did, and here is the result.

(A couple of notes on the notes: In the second stanza, third line, the words, “But on,” fit into a one-syllable slot, so that the word “tree” falls on the longer note. And on the refrain, in the last phrase, “we shall reign,” the first time through try singing “reign” on a lower note, and the second time through take it to a higher note.)

ALLELUIA NOW IS OUR SONG
Tune: “Emperor of the Sea: Yeom Yang (Yum Jang) Theme”

Death and doom held their sway;
Growing gloom enshrouded Adam’s sons.
Even heaven darkened that noonday;
His own Son God shuns.

Sin and Satan had won;
Sad to say, the Lord of Life was dead.
But on that tree the woman’s Seed triumphed,
Crushed the serpent’s head.

Alleluia now is our song
To Christ the Lamb who was slain.
Alleluias ever prolong;
With Christ in his life we shall reign!

Death and doom are destroyed;
No man’s tomb could hold the Holy One.
On the cross sin’s pow’r has been made void;
What we lost he won.

Light and life are restored
Now that Christ is risen from the grave.
We belong to Jesus Christ our Lord;
He is strong to save.

Alleluia now is our song
To Christ the Lamb who was slain.
Alleluias ever prolong;
With Christ in his life we shall reign!
